Did You Know?

  • The Church of St Breaca was built before Columbus discovered America.
  • There has been a church on the site for about 1,500 years.
  • The 15th century wall paintings of St Christopher and Christ of the Trades were painted when the church was built, while the plaster was still wet.
  • The wall paintings are one of the 100 Church Treasures nationwide that the Church of England has selected for special conservation work.
  • Margaret Godolphin, wife of the 1st Earl of Godolphin, is buried in the church.
  • The pinnacles on the tower cost £2 15s. to repair in 1778, after a lightning strike.  Repairs are needed again, but today they will cost more than £100,000.
  • Roof and rainwater goods repairs are planned this year, costing £55,000.
  • It costs over £4,000 a year to insure the church.
